The summer of solidarity is started, and so many volunteers have already committed themselves. This is the summer we love: vacation and day trips with children of the suburbs, the elderly, people with disabilities, homeless, migrants - Summer camps for Roma children - Missions in Africa for university students. With the brand new hashtag #SANTEGIDIOSUMMER you can easily follow and be part of the many and so inspiring activities taking place during the summer.
#santegidiosummer is made by those wishing to enjoy an alternative summer, spending one week or more together with someone who would not have had the chance to do so, and actively experiencing sympathy and generosity for the others. It is true, summer - and not just the cold winter - is a difficult time for many poor people: the heavy heat, the lack of opportunities to meet with somebody, reduced services, and consequent isolation are severe risk factor for the health of many among them. Especially for the most fragile one, summer does not immediately mean vacation, rather solitude. A growing phenomenon, which concerns above all the elderly: there are millions of over 65 who do not leave home just for a day during summer time.
That is why, for summer, in all the cities where Sant’Egidio is present, the Community does not stop to be alongside the poor. Soup kitchen and help centres stay open, proper vacations are organised with those who are helped throughout the year: a week at the lake, at the sea, on the hills, in the mountains, all self-managed and self-funded. An opportunity not only to escape the heat of the cities but also to get out of loneliness, to meet new people and build up friendship. This is the good side of holidays: an increasing number of volunteers - young and old, and sometimes with their relatives – will freely spend real quality time with the kids of the Schools of Peace (children living in the suburbs), the elderly, people with disabilities, the homeless and migrants, including those who safely arrived in Europe thanks to the Humanitarian Corridors.
Moreover, dozens of university students from different cities will go to Africa to support solidarity missions, such as the DREAM program for the treatment of AIDS, and humanitarian aid distributions to the populations of Malawi and Mozambique, severely hit by Cyclone Idai.
